Couriot pit and the Mine Museum
Closed in 1973, the Couriot pit keeps its two emblematic pit towers and its re-greened spoil heaps. Turned into a Mine Museum, it tells the life of the miners: the hanging locker room, the engine room and a reconstructed gallery descent. A moving visit that plunges into the city’s DNA and leaves plenty to talk about over a coffee at nearby Place Chavanelle.
Geoffroy-Guichard, the cauldron
The legendary Verts play in one of the finest football grounds in France. Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium, nicknamed the cauldron, can be visited outside match days: changing rooms, tunnel, pitch. You feel the attachment of a whole city to its club. A great setting for an original date, to continue in a local bistro over a homemade sandwich or a glass of Côte-Roannaise.
Around Firminy, the Le Corbusier site
Fifteen minutes from the centre, Firminy holds one of the largest Le Corbusier sites in the world: the House of Culture, the stadium, Saint-Pierre Church and the Unité d’habitation. A UNESCO-listed place, striking to explore together. On Lyad, Saint-Étienne members share their favourite corners; it is up to you to find someone to push the door of the next museum or simply a terrace.
